Legal English language and skills course for employment lawyers

A highly practical course to help you perform key functions of your work effectively in legal English. The course will expand your legal terminology and enhance  your use of it.

Course length

Three days recommended, but can be shortened or extended for in-house groups.

A day consists of six full hours, a one-hour lunch break and two 15-minute refreshment breaks.

What does the course cover?

Legal English terminology with comparisons of US and British English:

  • employment contract basics: how a contract is formed, sources of law, express and implied terms, EU directive requirements; comparing EU law, English law and participants’ laws
  • key provisions of employment contracts for junior staff and for management
  • transfer of undertakings on sale of a business
  • discrimination (eg on grounds of gender, race, and age)
  • employee claims and litigation
  • redundancy and dismissal

Skills, with role-play:

  •  advising
  •  writing letters (an introduction to legal letter writing and clear writing)
  •  introduction to clear contract drafting
  •  presenting
  •  negotiating

General discussion including of relevant cases, EU directives and policies.
